It’s hard to justify the purchase for those who are merely interested in Mortal Kombat 11’s story, and yet it’s both one of the most entertaining campaigns I’ve played this year, and the most satisfying. If I’m disappointed at the price though, it’s only because Aftermath is such a fantastic expansion. It felt clean and satisfying and tidy in a way that few games ever accomplish. While we will undoubtedly get more Mortal Kombat in the future, the ending of Mortal Kombat 11 could’ve just as easily been an ending for the entire series. The original ending(s) of Mortal Kombat 11 gave NetherRealm a clean slate. But NetherRealm’s spent nearly three decades-nearly a decade with this trilogy alone-building these characters and their relationships, and it pays off here.”

This is a series about people drafted into a mystical fight club to protect Earth from demonic invasion. Mortal Kombat’s source material is surface-level dumb, absolutely. “It’s proof once again that engaging storytelling stems from characters. Hell, one of the most ambitious and entertaining stories I’ve ever seen in a fighting game. Balancing the fan service of the Mortal Kombat 9 reboot with the advances from Mortal Kombat X, it made good on dozens of plot threads and characters-all while telling one of the most ambitious and entertaining stories in the series. Mortal Kombat 11 told a brilliant story, start to finish. First person is exclusive to those who have it, but you’ll still be able to play the new missions and try out the new class should you have someone who owns the expansion invite you.Mortal Kombat 11 needed an after-credits stinger, and it gets one with this week’s Aftermath expansion.

Though the light weapons didn’t feel as impacting and I tended to deviate to medium and heavy.Įven though the new expansion also effects those who don’t own Aftermath, there are still some features that are locked for those who haven’t purchased the expansion. Those who are in the Slasher class like myself would find this new feature to be exciting. You now have light, medium, and heavy weapons each having their own advantages, range, and power. There’s also a new addition to melee introduced. The first person mode doesn’t really change anything about the game, but it does grant a refreshing perspective. So if you ever find yourself not liking it, you can easily go back to third person. You can turn it on and off at your leisure even in the middle of a game by heading to the options menu. I ended up playing the new episodes through this mode as it felt easier to aim as I got a better view of things. The new first person mode, however, was something I greatly enjoyed.

It’s a decent class for escaping out of hordes when surrounded, but you’d have to already be in trouble to ever find yourself in that position. It wasn’t anywhere near as useful or as fun as the other classes at dispatching the zekes. After trying out the Vanguard class myself I can’t really quite say that it was as enticing as I had expected it to be. Along with two new episodes, Aftermath gives you a first person mode and an all new class to play around with, the Vanguard.
